WebPageTest New Opportunities and Experiments: Test Virtually Anything

There has never been a better time for web developers to approach SEO.

The pace at which both new and familiar tools and resources are innovative and open options for us also demands that we catch up. Recently, as Google released algorithm updates and metric calculation changes, the requirements for performance optimization have increased.

One of the tools you should be familiar with is WebPageTest. They recently release Some incredibly useful new fully integrated testing tools.

WebPageTest now proxies real-time, user-specified HTML changes via Netlify and runs comparison tests within the user interface. No coding required.

Genius makes sense

The three big areas of smart application logic of interest bubble the results, with text claims as well as retesting options to perform a combination of variations for comparison. The set of tests available in WebPageTest means that you don’t have to set up your tests using a third-party proxy tool that duplicates what you can test directly.

This was all technically possible before, and the original approach remains important.

It’s very comprehensive, but there are always tests that need to be run using the proxy host of your choice. However, this requires JavaScript and Cloudflare processing.

WebPageTest allows you to point and click.

Troublesome lab data

Always keep in mind that the best possible combination of numbers obtained in lab tests may not give the same numbers in the field. In fact, it can corrupt the functionality of your website.

Scripts and styles have a developer-defined load order, and changes can mean significant changes that aren’t suitable for your production environment. Proxy hosts can provide access to QA as part of the optimization process.

Let’s talk about how great a testbed is to demonstrate HTML optimization so that the warning doesn’t get in the way. It has been the basis of our workshops and conference sessions for over a year.

The articles in the Search Engine Land Guide will help you set up your testbed. SMX Advanced uses the updated version. Participate in a live If you can make it.

chance

The Opportunities text of WebPageText is available to everyone in the report.

You no longer need JavaScript skills to perform HTML variation comparisons.Instead, you’ll need a paid account to run the labeled built-in proxy test. experiment..

A free account makes it easier to access reports and history, but it doesn’t run Experiments. You can also write JavaScript to proxy your own tests for free.

There is no convenient place and it takes too much time.

Free opportunity. Paid account for experiments.

experiment

In the WebPageTest report[Opportunities&Experiments]Select a menu item to see a comprehensive list of results.

Opportunities here are derived from actual test conditions (simulated in hardware if possible). Our tests have shown the opportunity to try and retest variations of rendering block resources (typically JavaScript and CSS), lazy loaded images, self-hosted third-party scripts, and more.

Variation requires a professional account

Use the interface to test asynchronous, deferred, or inline scripts and stylesheets. I’ve written Cloudflare Worker JavaScript to proxy these tests. We’ve also added an inline style rule to defer loading content, including footers, to the bottom of the page. The initial array of WebPageTest integrations can handle most, but not all, of the original tests.

It’s easy to put together a test right now.

Change the test settings and start running the variation to focus on the overall green Core Web Vitals Holy Grail. This offering is surprisingly comprehensive and covers far more than anything that impacts the performance of your web page.

The following questions will find three categories that group experimental opportunities.

  • Is it fast? Rapidness categorizes and groups performance optimization experiments.
  • Can you use it? Usability groups HTML validation errors that can affect screen readers and layout shifts.
  • Is it elastic? Restoring forces lead to security concerns, including mixed protocols. Use the check box interface to change the test settings and start running the variation. Get sophisticated options in the comparison report.

Test suite dashboard

WebPageTest is similar to a test suite dashboard, and you need to do it in a report that provides a waterfall chart representation that is more detailed than Lighthouse and much better than ChromeDevTools.

For point-and-click, you can run HTML experiments in a “no code” environment, but the details and navigation provided require experience. Coding experience is the best.

The new built-in Experiment duplicates another Cloudflare worker task by removing all JavaScript. Making such things accessible is much more convenient than scripting test variations.

Advanced experimentation allows you to insert HTML in key locations, test tactics to change the load order, fail to load, and make changes, including shrinking resources.

Literally, there’s nothing technically preventing you from actually testing something on any page.

Fall into the pitfalls of success

The comparison report itself helps in the goal-achieving process to select and retest more variations. Results Metrics banners include color-coded improvements and deterioration of scores between controls and experiments.

The remaining Opportunity sections, including a subset of experimental switches, are shown below. You can click to make significant improvements.

We’ve done a lot of work to create a test for the demonstration in SMX Advanced. Live can be expected to cover this major update to the tool itself used. It will be very easy.

See if the fast text cycle of the WebPageTest experimental integration gets what you’re already prepared to offer. Let’s see if we can reach the green entirely.
