The foldable smartphone market, once a small niche for the wealthiest buyers, is expanding rapidly and new statistics show the magnitude of its growth.
Display expert DSCC report (Opens in a new tab)The foldable smartphone market is looking at “1st quarter of 2022” or January-March of this year. We struggled during the 2021 Christmas period, but it was the third best quarter ever for this kind of mobile.
But when it comes to shipping, there are clearly winners. It is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 with a 51% market share, ahead of the Z Flip 3 (2nd) and Huawei P50 Pocket (3rd). ..
These three phones are old flagships from Samsung and Huawei, accounting for 91% of shipments, with Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold and Oppo Find N remaining.
Clamshells (such as Flip and P50 Pocket) are big winners, and despite the fact that these two devices are the only new models in this category, they have gained 70% of the market share.

With lots of numbers flying around, foldable smartphone makers may be getting some important points from this news.
First, clamshells are clearly popular, and with these stats in mind, it doesn’t really make sense that only Samsung, Huawei, and Motorola make these devices-the latter folds in 2022. I didn’t give an expression.
More companies, such as Xiaomi, Honor and Oppo, will be paying attention to this form factor.
Clamshell has a big advantage, it’s in the pricing department. Samsung’s Z Flip 3 was positioned as an alternative budget to the Z Fold 3, due to its size. Small clamshells require less components than larger screens and larger siblings, so purchase costs are lower.
Another small interesting thing is that the three foldable smartphones, which make up 91% of foldable smartphone sales, are some of the rare examples of foldable devices sold on the global market. Many devices such as Honor Magic V, Oppo Find N, and Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold are sold only in China, and all of these dedicated devices clearly accounted for less than 9% of sales.
Many companies may be aware that they need to expand their reach to keep up with the competition for foldable smartphones.
So, overall, if companies have these statistics in mind, clamshell phones have more options, and clamshell phones will eventually be more affordable.
