120 fps support is only for PC gamers with powerful enough hardware. However, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S owners with 120Hz, HDMI 2.1 compatible displays can reach the higher heights of 4K and 120fps, although consoles are usually one or the other. Someone with a 120Hz HDMI 2.0 display can also get him 120fps, but only 1080p (and sometimes 1440p).

PS5 and Xbox Series X|S 120fps: Why is 120fps better than 60fps?
Is it really important to have a higher frame rate? Simply put, yes, but it’s a luxury for many people right now. Support for 120 fps is a competitive game where split-second action makes all the difference Running the game at a higher framerate makes the game’s movement incredibly smooth, offsetting motion sickness and making the game look cleaner overall.
However, this is also a graphics-intensive feature, so not all games support it, which was not possible on previous generation consoles like the PS4 and the Xbox One family.
It’s always difficult to fully showcase the benefits of 120 fps without experiencing it first hand, but the video below shows Ori and the Will of the Wisps running at 60 fps and 120 fps. 60 fps is still considered the sweet spot for framerates, but the difference between the two is clear. Ori looks like a stop-start at his 60 fps, but at 120 fps the movement is smoother.

It’s easy to confuse the two, but it’s important to know the difference. Hertz (Hz) represents the number of times the display refreshes in her second. Most TVs are limited to 60Hz, but you may have seen monitors that support 144Hz or 360Hz. If your TV only has a 60Hz refresh rate, you won’t be able to play at 120fps. The maximum number of refreshes per second that can be achieved is 60. 120 fps requires a 120 Hz capable display.
Frames per second (fps) is the number of individual images produced by a console or PC. Developers often lock the framerate to a set value (30, 60, or 120) to provide a stable and consistent experience. If you’ve ever played an unlocked 30 fps game, it’s often very frustrating as the game fluctuates wildly between different framerate values. This leads to a choppy and inconsistent experience.
The main points are: If your display supports 120 Hz, you can run games at 120 fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S with an HDMI 2.0 or HDMI 2.1 port. Again, HDMI 2.1 or 2.0 connections affect the resolution you can run when you hit 120 fps.
