How to Build Great Backlinks in 2022 (9 Proven Strategies)

Are you ready to get some quality backlinks and raise your site’s Google rankings?

Great!

This post contains nine proven link-building strategies that are currently performing great.

(2022)

let’s start!

1. Use the data to get links from news sites and blogs

One of my recent guides explained how to use it Halo To be a source of information for reporters.

And that’s definitely what you should do.

However, HARO connects you with journalists who are planning features in advance.

And what else do reporters do? Of course they report the news! And the news doesn’t work on a fixed schedule.

So … if you have the latest news related to your niche, it’s a great opportunity to pick up mentions and links.

Here’s what to do:

1. Monitor the news for new references to the site’s main topics

The easiest way to do that is Set up Google alerts Or Buzz Sumo alert.

Buzzsumo – McDonald's Keyword Alert

2. Contact a reporter with added value

If you want to get a link from a news site, you need to do some work.

We need to provide real value to reporters. And ideally, make their lives easier.

He reached out and said, “I saw you write about this, I wrote about it too.” Immediately flagged as a spammer.

How do you provide value? Here are some ideas:

  1. Quote them personal insights from your industry. Include credentials.
  2. Provides your own data or statistics.
  3. Offer another take.
  4. Create infographics or custom visuals that you can embed in your story.

Either way, there’s one very important thing …

You need to act fast.

Today’s newspaper is tomorrow’s recycling. Ideally, you’ll want to get in touch on the same day that the news is reported.

Professional tips: Create a personal blackbook of journalists that covers your industry. Then ping as soon as you see the story broken. That way, you can catch them while they’re still working on an article for publication.

2. Scaling skyscraper techniques

Yeah, skyscraper content is my number one reliable tactic for building high quality links.

In fact, this Skyscraper content I published a while back has already gained 5,6K backlinks.

Voice Search SEO Survey – Backlinks

The best place? This approach is very simple. In fact, it’s so simple that I can summarize it in just three steps:

  1. Find popular content in your niche. Hint: Popularity = lots of backlinks.
  2. Make something even better.
  3. Then promote the one!

Here are some additional tips to help you extend this strategy.

Find popular content

The first phone is Google. Search for popular keywords in your niche, and it’s arguably that the # 1 page ranking has backlinks that enhance that # 1 ranking.

Google SERP – Old Diet Tips

However, suppose you don’t know which topic is best for attracting links. Is there a way to get rid of the guesswork?

yes.

((((Note: This requires an account with Semrush or other SEO tools. )

Semrush and other link analysis tools have a report called “Best by links”. This will display the most linked pages on any site.

For example, you can see that my Google Ranking Factor post gets links from almost 5,000 domains.

Semrush – Indexed Page – Backlinko

Just connect to a competitor’s site and find the most popular page and you’re ready to go. Easy and easy.

Make something (a lot) better

Did you find the skyscraper page? You look amazing. The next step is to create something even better.

But …

… Making your page “a little” better doesn’t mean to cut it.

If you really want to pull in those links, you’ll have to do something better.

In fact, I’m trying to make skyscraper content 5-10 times better than the current home page.

What do I have to do?

Easy. I find out what is missing. Then fill those gaps.

Here are some tips from my personal checklist:

  1. Does the ranking page elaborate on the topic? If not, try to cover everything you skipped.
  2. Is the text on the ranking page heavy? If so, I include a lot of high quality images in my post to make it more visually appealing.
  3. Does the ranking page contain videos? If not, add one. In fact, it will do so anyway!
  4. Does the ranking page contain 10 tips? Then include 20. Doubling is a good starting point.
  5. Does the ranking page contain links to related resources? If not, make sure I do.

With a little thought, I haven’t found a page that can’t be multiplied by 10 with great effort.

For example, a few months ago, I noticed that most posts on “How to get more YouTube subscribers” were terrible.

specifically:

  • They were written by people who don’t have a successful YouTube channel
  • They quoted outdated strategies, techniques and features
  • There was no visual showing how to implement each strategy
  • They all reversed the same tired strategy

So I set out to make something better.

Backlinko – How to Get YouTube Subscribers

Unlike the other posts I read, my post had something like this:

  • A real-life example of growing a channel using hints
  • A new strategy not found anywhere else
  • Lots of screenshots and visuals to make the technique easier to understand (and use)

Then promote Heck

Contacting the people featured in your content is a good place to start promoting your content.

Besides that, here are some other tips:

  1. Contact the person who links to the competitor’s page.
  2. Contact the person who commented on the competitor’s page.
  3. Contact the person who shared the competitor’s page on social.
  4. Contact someone who links to other pages in the top 10.

Create a big prospect list … and make a fuss!

3. Moving Man Method 2.0

Nailed “Moving man method“?

There is another way to get high quality links from old content.

(Moving Man Method 2.0.)

This time … instead of focusing on businesses that have become pop or rebranded, we will leverage outdated businesses. information.

why? Because things change!

This is a very simple example.

Let’s say you have a page that ranks the most popular websites in the world.

Well, a while ago YouTube has overtaken Facebook as the second most visited website on the planet..

And what do you think happened? Suddenly there was a large number of pages containing old information.

Forbes – Outdated Articles

To be exact, over 11,000!

(And that’s just one query …)

Now you have a perfect “in”.

We can:

  1. Please contact all sites with old information.
  2. Please let them know that it has changed.
  3. Turn them to our own page while we are there!

Professional tips: If something has changed recently in your industry, use Google’s date feature to search for articles published before the change.

Google Search – Custom Date Range

4. Double down effective content formats

When it comes to creating content that attracts quality links, I don’t like to rely on guesswork. And you shouldn’t do that either.

There are several proven content formats that people love to link to.

  • List posts
  • quiz
  • “Why” post
  • “How to” post
  • Infographic
  • video

However, each industry is different. Video may work best in your universe. And for others, it’s a list post.

So it’s a good idea to try a few different formats to see which one works best for you.

Then double down those formats.

Professional tips: Combine two or more of these formats into one piece. Tip: Works well with list-style “how-to” posts, or “reason” posts that include infographics and videos.

5. Podcast Link Building

Some time ago I was looking at where one of my niche sites got the backlinks.

And I noticed that most of their backlinks came from going to podcasts.

Quicksprout – Podcast Backlinks

So I decided to be a guest of as many podcasts as possible.

In fact, I appeared in over 50 Next year and a half podcast.

Google SERP – Bryan Dean Podcast

These podcasts didn’t just send serious traffic in my way …

Serious traffic

But as a result they Tons Of the backlink.

Interview on a podcast

So:

How do you find a podcast?

First, take a headshot of someone in a niche who has appeared in many podcasts. Then put their headshots in Google’s reverse image search.

And you are set:

6. Build links for resource pages

What is the purpose of the resource page? To link to other useful pages!

And that’s the dream of a link builder.

All you have to do is:

  1. Find em’.
  2. Make sure you have something worth the link.
  3. Reach out.

To be honest:

Finding them is probably the hardest part. So here are 10 advanced Google searches that will help you:

  1. “{Yourkeyword}” + inurl: resources
  2. “{Yourkeyword}” + inurl: links
  3. “{Yourkeyword}” + inurl: recommended
  4. “{Yourkeyword}” + “Top Website”
  5. “{Yourkeyword}” + “top site”
  6. “{Yourkeyword}” + “Recommended Website”
  7. “{Yourkeyword}” + “Recommended resources”
  8. “{Yourkeyword}” + “Read more”
  9. “{Your keyword}” + “Recommended reading material”
  10. “{Yourkeyword}” + “useful site”

Professional tips: Turning around this round, the carefully selected and highly helpful resource pages on your site are great for getting quality links. You can also visit other resource pages and suggest links to your own resource pages. It sounds a bit like Inception, but … it still works.

7. Mention of unlinked brands

If someone mentions your brand in the article but doesn’t include the link, it’s a great opportunity.

All you have to do is reach out …

… And 9 out of 10 get the link.

We recommend that you set up a brand name alert.

That way, you’ll be notified every time your business is mentioned on the web.

Buzzsumo – Mention

Professional tips: Did you get a brand technique like “Moving Man Method”? Then set that alert as well.

8. Name your strategy

Have you heard of “Moving Man Method” or “Skyscraper Technique”?

Uh … both of these terms are really what you made 🙂

This is whenever someone is writing about them …

… I get another quality backlink!

Backlinks of different quality

Can you do the same?

of course! All you have to do is:

  1. Understand the processes or strategies that are specific to your business.
  2. Give it a catchy name.
  3. Write about it!

And it’s writing about an important process. You can get the link only if:

  1. Your strategy is very convenient.
  2. You can prove that it works.

That’s why we always pick up real-life case studies when uncovering new strategies and methods.

9. 2-step email outreach

A soft and soft approach to outreach often yields better results than requesting a link immediately.

Try warming up your prospects using a feeler email like the one below.

Mike Bonadio – Outreach Email

Professional tips: I also use this technique Before Start a new post. Contact your prospects to tell them what’s coming and ask for permission to send them when you publish. In most cases, the answer is certainly yes! A little courtesy can be very helpful in outreach.

Ready to get some high quality backlinks?

All of the above tactics have been tried and tested. And I used them to increase Backlinko’s search traffic from zero to over 175,000 unique visits per month.

Bonus: They are also 100% white hats. So you don’t have to worry about being blamed for Google updates.
