2022 Toyota GR Supra 2.0 Review: Skilled, if not passionate


Toyota Supra has an identity crisis. Is it a reborn Japanese classic? It’s a kind, but it’s just a name. Is it a real sports car? It’s certainly dynamic, but it doesn’t force you to go for a drive like the Mazda MX-5 Miata. Is this two-seater a more spectacular tourer? No: Not comfortable enough for long drives and the luggage space is small.

The classification of Supra can be difficult, so let’s focus on a few facts. As the name implies, the GR Supra 2.0 has a 2.0-liter engine. A brave little unit of Bavarian history, this turbocharged dynamo delivers 255 horsepower and 295 pound-foot torque. It may not sound like a lot of underhood stallion, but believe me, it’s more than enough to get this coupe on the road. Its vitality diminishes slightly at highway speeds, but the Supra collides violently just outside the line and can reach 60 mph in less than five seconds.

The Supra’s more sophisticated 6-cylinder model is even more dramatic, but from an acceleration perspective, it’s not really necessary, especially when it comes to fuel economy. A 4-cylinder Supra sticker that combines a 25 mpg city, a 32 mpg highway, and 28 mpg. In mixed use, it averages 35.5 mpg, which is excellent.

Its lively and economical performance is supported and supported by the Supra 2.0’s only gearbox, the Quickshift 8-speed automatic. It’s hard to discuss the effectiveness of this transmission, even if it’s quick, responsive, and clumsy can hurt your driving experience. Gear changes are not always smooth, especially when rolling to a stop. Downshifts cause head toss. This can be annoying as soon as you get caught in a traffic jam. Similarly, the idling stop system not only saves a lot of fuel, but also sends a tremor in the car every time the engine reignites. Fortunately, the center console has a button to disable stop start.

A manual transmission with automatic rotation matching will be introduced in the 6-cylinder Supra in 2023. This is a small addition that makes the car about 100 times more interesting. No, the 6-speed stick doesn’t fix other flaws in the Supra, but it works tremendously to improve driver involvement. Sadly, 4-cylinder models like me will only remain automatic.

The Toyota Supra provides enough speed, yet it has the sophistication to keep everything under control. The suspension of this car, which provides a solid foothold, is not enough to get excited. The ride quality is hard enough and you can feel the surface faithfully, but there is almost no roughness in the passenger compartment. The 255 / 40ZR18 Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires provide the right amount of grip, but make a lot of noise.

When it comes to steering, it’s heavy and overwhelmingly dense, but quick ratios and amazing feedback make this car alive and agile. The GR Supra 2.0 brakes consist of a 13-inch disc with front and rear clamped with single-piston calipers, slightly smaller than a 6-cylinder car, but more biting than a Doberman Pinscher. The pedals are too sensitive to adjust and can be stopped smoothly with the transmission.

The Supra cabin is well built and has decent quality materials. The plastic used has an attractive wood grain, and all controls, from the wiper and turn signal handles to the shifter and radio dial, are luxurious. Not surprisingly, the interior isn’t that big. It fits nicely for two people, but there isn’t much storage space except for one or two cubies, a glove box and a 10.2 cubic foot trunk. Pack light.

The manually adjustable seat duet in this example is very solid and mounted near the floor, but these chairs are more comfortable than you might think. However, getting in and out of this car can be difficult. Even tall people have plenty of room, but the short door openings and the very wide thresholds require ducks when entering and exiting carefully. Not surprisingly, visibility is also a bit difficult. The A-pillars are thick, but the side windows are small, but the roof stanchions are large, making it impossible to look over the shoulders. Thank you for blind spot monitoring.

Besides outward visibility, there are some ergonomic quirks worth mentioning. First, there is no way to automatically synchronize both temperatures in a dual zone climate control system. There are no hardware buttons or infotainment system settings. And second, the Supra doesn’t have an external trunk release, and another annoying omission. (The luggage compartment can be opened using the internal buttons or key fobs.)

Given that it’s basically a BMW, the Supra features an older version of the German car maker’s iDrive infotainment system. This unattractive, non-intuitive multimedia array is still responsive.
